一、系所各學制之成立經過
本學系大學部創立於民國五十五年(1966)，迄今已歷四十餘寒暑，為臺灣最北之歷史學系。創系主任由梁任公高足周培智教授擔任，一時北臺史學名家咸聚於此，作育無數英才。八十六學年度，在周宗賢主任三年積極奔走下，得以奉准成立碩士班，次年招生。九十三學年度，劉增泉主任策劃成立碩士在職專班，至九十六學年度停招。
二、系所設立宗旨與初期課程開設形態
本學系設立之初，以培養歷史研究、文化建設暨教學人才為主。因此，對史學方法、本國史、世界史、專業史、斷代史等各領域科目，都儘可能開設課程，遇專任教師不擅長任教的科目，則敦請校外專家前來授課，一時多樣化的課程頗為齊備，提供學生充分選擇的機會，陶育文化通才與歷史研究專才。 六十年(1971)起開設〈臺灣史〉課程，採用「講座」方式進行，開啟了本學系臺灣史教學與研究，是最早將〈臺灣史〉列入正式課程的大學之一。
三、師資結構
本學系目前共計有10名專任教師，其中教授3名、副教授5名、助理教授2名；兼任教師共計有17名。每位教師皆學有專長，除一般基礎史學外，研究範圍包括中、外歷史、臺灣史、史學史、社會經濟史、學術思想史、藝術文化史、歷史哲學等等。教師每年皆有學術論文或專著發表，見之於國內外學術刊物中，每年並有數位獲國科會或內政部等其他單位之研究獎助；此外，尚接受公私立機構、團體之委託，從事調查研究或撰述。
四、空間使用
本學系所辦公室位於淡水校區文學館L523，主任辦公室L524。本系師生作各種活動用途研究室有L512的研究生研究室、L525的臺灣史研究室和L309的酒文化研究室，而本學系教師們的研究室則集中在文學館6樓。
The Department of History
The department of History at Tamkang University was founded in 1955 and started to offer a master program since 1997. We currently have ten faculty members (four professors, five associate professors, and one assistant professor). The rough annual undergraduate enrollment is 450 and graduate is 20.
The department of History offers diverse curriculums in Taiwan History, Chinese History, and World History. We are aiming to help the students cultivate and enhance their capability to think and analyze through the courses we provide. Two reading groups are guided by our experienced faculty in undergraduate: one is focusing on Shiji; the other is focusing on the new findings and explanations in the history. And, the graduate students organize reading groups in different subjects by themselves.
Department of History dedicates to promoting our professional knowledge and helping the community development. We have academic journal “Tamkang Historical Review” published annually. Different seminars focusing the different historical topics are held regularly as well as the topics about research of Tamsui and regional history. The historyrelated exhibits and cultural & creative studios are also conducted and guided by history department. The campus in Tamsui provides an excellent location for our students to study. We and our students take our university social responsibility in Tamsui to contribute our effort to make Tamsui be a greater environment for the residents and the coming students.
